2 Simple Techniques to Prevent Plantar Warts and Athlete’s Foot
What are Plantar Warts and Athlete’s Foot and How are They Similar?
Plantar warts are hard, grainy growths that commonly form on the balls or heels of your feet. While they are mostly harmless, plantar warts can be a source of pain, discomfort, and embarrassment. Plantar warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV); this virus can enter your body through small cuts or abrasions in your skin, particularly on the soles of your feet.
Similar to plantar warts, athlete’s foot is caused by an active tinea (ringworm) infection. Athlete’s foot develops upon exposure to a specific type of fungus that grows on the skin of the feet, most notably in the areas between your toes. In addition to itching, athlete’s foot can cause a burning or stinging sensation, plus redness, peeling, blistering, and cracked skin.
One of the biggest similarities between plantar warts and athlete’s foot is how quickly these infections can spread—not only to other parts of your own body but also to other people.
Steps to Prevent Plantar Warts and Athlete’s Foot
There are two simple techniques that you can easily implement into your foot care routine in order to avoid contracting an athlete’s foot and plantar warts: wearing dry shoes and having adequate foot protection.
Always Wear Dry Shoes
The fungus that causes athlete’s foot and the virus that causes plantar warts both thrive in warm, moist environments. Having dry shoes on hand can go a long way in the prevention of athlete’s foot and plantar warts.
If you decide to go for a walk and you accidentally step in a puddle, for example, make it a priority to get somewhere (home preferably) and take your shoes off as soon as possible. Clean and dry your feet, and then place your shoes in an area where they can dry thoroughly before you put them back on. Your goal should be to reduce the moisture level within your shoes and create an inhospitable environment for harmful microorganisms to grow and multiply. If you happen to have some shoe/boot dryers, utilize them to dry out the wet shoes completely.
If you find that your feet tend to sweat easily, especially on hot, humid days, we recommend switching back and forth between two separate pairs of shoes, that way one pair has a chance to dry out while you wear the other. Invest in breathable shoes and moisture-wicking socks, and avoid wearing shoes made from synthetic materials like plastic and rubber, which can exacerbate sweating. You also have the option to purchase foot powders or antifungal sprays that are designed to absorb moisture and keep your shoes dry throughout the day.
Always Wear Foot Protection in Public Places
Many people are exposed to athlete’s foot and plantar warts as a result of walking around barefoot in areas where the HPV virus and the fungi that cause athlete’s foot thrives. These areas include swimming pools, locker rooms, gym showers, and other high-traffic areas where people are particularly vulnerable to contracting these contagious foot conditions on account of not wearing the necessary foot protection. Because these areas are moist and warm, they create an ideal breeding ground where people of all ages could potentially contact an athlete’s foot or the HPV virus.
While it may be tempting to walk around barefoot as others are doing, keep in mind that your chances of contracting athlete’s foot or the HPV virus increase exponentially in these situations, especially if you have a small cut or abrasion on your feet that you may not even be aware of. It’s always best to err on the side of caution and keep your feet protected. Doing so even sets an excellent example for others!
We recommend having a dedicated pair of footwear—shower shoes, flip-flops, or sandals—that you can plan to wear around the pool deck, in a public shower, and similar areas. When you give yourself easy access to the foot protection you need to stay safe, it’s easier to make the right decision, and it can ultimately save you from having to experience the bothersome symptoms related to an athlete’s foot or plantar warts.
